Three Types of Hydraulic Pumps

A hydraulic pump is the source of the power of your hydraulic system, making it the most critical component. There are mainly three kinds of hydraulic pumps:

Piston pumps

Piston pumps are the most common and most capable of complex jobs. You are most likely to find these hydraulic pumps in manufacturing situations. They are the pumps you will use in high-pressure applications. A piston pump is a positive displacement pump that uses a high-pressure seal working reciprocally with a piston to move water. This configuration allows them to operate under high pressure without noticeably affecting flow rate.

Vane pumps

These are less common and simpler pumps that you can use for lower-pressure applications with high flow rates. Vane pumps are positive displacement pumps that can work with several different vanes, including flexible, swinging, rolling, external, and sliding. As the motor rotor rotates, the vanes sweep liquid to the opposite side of the cavity inside the motor and squeeze it through discharge holes in the cam.

Gear pumps

This is the most basic hydraulic pump you can use. You will typically use this pump for single, basic applications. Gear pumps work by using two gears that mesh to displace water. The gears rotate together, creating suction as they separate, which draws water into the pump — water it then displaces when the gears mesh together.

Common Signs Your Hydraulic Pump Needs Repairing

With proper maintenance, most hydraulic pumps will operate smoothly for years, but eventually, the pressure inside these devices will cause failures that need to be addressed as soon as possible.
 

Common signs your pump needs repairing include

Loud noises

Hearing lots of noises from hydraulic pumps signals that something isn’t right. Hydraulic pumps are full of fluids that flow through the system at high speeds and pressures. This can generate a lot of noise, which requires repairing or replacing. That is enough to generate a lot of noise; however, hydraulic pumps are designed to muffle such sounds.

Outside leaks

If you spot liquid outside your hydraulic pump, the leaking has spread, and action must be taken immediately. This is also an indication the pump is on its last legs. Leaking reduces the pressure and increases the system's temperature, which affects the oil's viscosity and further reduces the pressure in the system.

Inside leaks

As soon as you see liquids anywhere inside your pump, other than in the tubes they belong, there is something wrong with the pump. Something as simple as a loose seal or valve can lead to more serious cases of a break in the line. This will cause a drop in pressure and a malfunction of the entire system. Identifying this problem can be a bit trickier because the leak occurs on the inside of the pump, but if you carefully examine your pump before a long trip, you can spot the problem before it worsens.

High working temperatures

For hydraulic pumps to work correctly, it’s essential to maintain a certain level of fluid viscosity, which depends on the temperature and pressure. If either of these parameters is off, the pump will experience unnecessary strain, leading to premature failure.
